How To Buy A Diamond To establish a diamond’s quality, jewelers examine each of the 4Cs -- cut , clarity , carat weight , and color. The combination of the 4Cs determines the value of a particular diamond. For example, a colorless diamond is the highest quality in terms of color, but if it lacks clarity, or is not well cut, it will be of lower value. The finest diamonds posses the rarest quality in each of the 4Cs, and are the most valuable.
Strive for a diamond that offers the best combination of the 4Cs. Knowing how the 4Cs relate to one another will help you make an informed decision. Ultimately, you'll discover the unique combination of the 4Cs that makes a particular diamond the right choice for you. Its beauty and brilliance will capture the true sentiment of the occasion.
Cut:
Of all the 4 Cs, cut has the greatest effect on a diamond's beauty. In grading, cut evaluates the cutters skill in the fashioning of the diamond.
Diamonds have a unique ability to manipulate light efficiently. This unique ability can be released and maximized only by cutting and polishing the diamond to an extremely high level of accuracy.
Color:
A truly colorless diamond is extremely rare. Most diamonds possess varying degrees of yellow or brown and small, subtle differences in color can make a substantial difference in value.
Clarity:
Clarity is the evaluation of a diamond's internal and external characteristics. The fewer inclusions or blemishes, the more desirable the diamond. Inclusions are internal, that is, inside the diamond. Crystals are merely minerals trapped inside the diamond; feathers are breaks in the diamond. Blemishes are usually very small and are only on the surface of diamonds.
Carat:
The standard used to measure diamond weight is the carat. A carat equals 1/5 of a gram (or 1/142 of an ounce). Each carat is further divided into points, each point representing 1/100th of a carat. While weight may be the least important of the four Cs in determining value, it may be the easiest of the four Cs to gauge accurately and is the most objective. As diamonds increase in size, their cost tends to increase geometrically. Thus, a one-carat diamond may cost more than twice as much as a one-half carat stone of equal quality. Also, as previously stated, weight does not always enhance the value of a diamond. In fact, when a diamond is improperly cut, added weight may serve only to reduce its brilliance.
"I visited seven different jewelry stores before I found the perfect engagement ring at your store. Your family was so helpful in helping me select the ring which my fiancée now loves! Thank you so much!" - Nic

FAQ's:
Why a jewelry appraisal?
A jewelry appraisal is required for many reasons including insurance coverage,
estate liquidation purposes, and tax deduction if making a charitable donation.
Can any jeweler appraise my jewelry?
Because, legally, anyone can perform appraisals, it's important to make sure you use someone with the proper qualifications. As a Graduate Jeweler Gemologist, Tito is professionally trained to identify and grade diamonds and colored gemstones.
How much does jewelry insurance cost?
Typically, insurance will cost $1 per $100 of jewelry value per year.
So an $8000 ring would cost $80 per year for a homeowners' insurance rider.
Well worth it. However, you would have to check with your insurance agent for specific costs of your policy. We can also recommend an insurance company.
What if don't want a written appraisal and just want a rough idea of value?
For a smaller fee, we would be more than happy to review your jewelry for you. Each item must be throughly examined and market research must be conducted, though, even to provide a 'guesstimate'
Some jewelry, the ring that belonged to your great-aunt Getrude, can never be replaced. Even if you don't think that you are going to insure your jewelry we can give tell you its worth to help you decided what to do with it.
I want to insure my jewelry, but I don't know if what I have is worth appraising?
Bring it all in at once. We can go through it and say this is worth the appraisal and this in not. Most insurance companies will only cover up to either $500 or $1000 of jewelry not with its own insurance rider.
Whether it be for insurance, estate purposes, tax contribution, or simply out of curiosity Tito can provide an accurate appraisal for any purpose. Tito's appraisals contain very detailed and specific information about each item examined. Tito will make sure your appraisal contains all necessary information including function and purpose of the appraisal, a detailed description of the appraised item, a statement of value, and his name and qualifications. A picture can also be included. |
"Thank you very much for the appraisals you provided for the jewelry
I inherited...I had no idea where to begin and your professionalism helped me out at a tough time. It was exactly what I needed to settle the estate. I'll remember you for my future jewelry needs." - Tim
